Eventful Summer

(Sorry for the incompetent language, this is a revised version of a translation from the Danish version Post)

Although the calendar says October it still feels unmistakably like summer – a nice, long and eventful one.

The kids had a long summer holiday, a total of 8 weeks. Although it might sound very normal to Danish standards, it is new to us since the long holiday in Australia was in December-January, and usually were somewhat shorter. We availed ourselves of the new opportunities and did something we have talked about many times, but never before had the real opportunity to carry out in practice, we took advantage of the stopover we always have on the flight, since there is no direct flight from Denmark to either Korea or Australia. Hence we spent 2 weeks in Thailand, which we enjoyed to the full. Logistically, it was perfect, we had divided the long journey and more importantly the time difference into 2. This way we more or less avoided jetlag.

Since Thailand like most of Southeast Asia has the rainy season in the summer, we chose to spend our time on the island of Koh Samui, which is reputed to be less affected by rain. We were not disappointed since we had plenty of sunshine, relaxation, adventure and a delightful time together as a family. We stayed for the first week in a cozy small fishing village on the west coast. It was a surprisingly peaceful place with very few tourists. We availed ourselves of opportunities to explore the island from here, both on land and at sea, but what probably surprised us most was the incredibly delicious food that was prepared and served in small primitive bamboo huts.
The second week we spent on the more touristy east coast. It was like another holiday, but we enjoyed it just as much and had many great experiences here too. The beaches on the east side of the island are amazing and there was so much life at the markets and restaurant streets of the small towns. At the same time we kept our hire car so we could get around easily.
We have added some photos from the holiday in Thailand.

After this, it was time for our annual visit to Denmark. As usual it was fantastic to be able to meet with friends and family back home. The first weekend we celebrated combined 40th and 50th birthday for Rikke and her brother Mogens. There is exactly 10 years between them, so it offers some unique opportunities to celebrate the special birthdays together. The day was celebrated in the beautiful garden of Mogens and Annette’s country house, it was an amazing day and we were blessed with wonderful sunshine all day.
The anniversary was also celebrated with a game of bowling with the family in-law. A truly successful day as well.
After 2 weeks in Denmark Kent and Simon traveled back to Korea, Kent to work and Simon to begin his extended essay for the IB high school diploma. Rikke, Emil, William and Marcus stayed a few more weeks in Denmark and enjoyed the glorious summer and the good company.

Summer here in Korea has been unusual in that we the completely skipped the rainy season here in Busan. At a time like this, we really feel spoilt with only a few minutes walk to the beach and great restaurants, and not least our lovely balcony where we spent many of the summer evenings.

In early September we celebrated the youngest of our clan, Marcus. He is now 10 and gone is the days with small kids! It was a really nice day which we celebrated in the Jedig tradition with flags and songs and delicious food.

A few days later we had a visit from Michael Evans, one of our friends from the church in Lane Cove. He was on a business trip in Asia was able to fit in a stopover here in Busan. It was great to hear news from our friends in the south and to be able to share a little of our life here with him.

In late September Koreans celebrate the year’s biggest festival, ” ChuSeok ” which is similar to Thanksgiving. They traditionally spend this season with the family. We had a visit from Rikke’s sister and nephew, Ulla and Benjamin for one and a half weeks. It was great for us to have them in our home for the first time in over 5 years, we enjoyed each other’s company and had many fun and exciting adventures together. It was a truly successful visit and one of the greatest things is that now they’ve been here they can better relate to our lives than before.
We added some photos from Marcus Birthday and Ulla & Benjamins visit.

As described in the beginning, summer continues and we enjoy it to the full. The beach is full of life and the area is vibrant due to the international film festival held here in Busan every year. At the same time there is a few holidays in the first half of October which gives a little extra freedom to be and enjoy.
Life is a gift!
